Readers help struggling mother

32-year-old Hoang Thi Anh had to leave her children in the grandparents' care to accompany her husband to several hospitals for seven years to treat his cirrhosis. Her husband died in 2017. He left behind three children and the debts of hundreds of millions of VND.

Their house is too small and the only valuable item is the sewing machine which she uses to make raincoats. Anh's youngest child often falls ill so she has to stay home to take care of him.

"My income fell when he got ill. He often has pneumonia and bronchitis," she said.

Her neighbours planned to help her repair the house and give her food or look after her children for a while.

A Dantri representative gave Anh VND97,340,000 to help her raise the children.

"We are in debt to everyone. This is such a huge sum of money and a meaningful gift to us. I thought I was dreaming," Anh said. "I'll use the money to repay some of the debts and take care of the children."
