The project was proposed on June 8 while the ministry debated ground clearance work for Long Thanh Airport. Minister of Transport Truong Quang Nghia emphasised that the new airport was necessary as Tan Son Nhat Airport is overloaded.

Nghia said right after finishing Long Thanh Airport, they should build a 43-km-long railway to connect two airports.

"This is a huge opportunity for HCM City, Dong Nai and Binh Duong provinces. We'll include this project immediately in the feasible report for the airport," Nghia said.

Nghia promised to carry out the project and ensure that the investment wouldn't go to waste. The capital will come from various sources including ODA, the state budget and private sector as the state budget could only be used for ground clearance task.

Long Thanh Airport project has garnered much interest from both local and foreign investors.

"Investing in airport or train station is no longer new and attracts lots of investors. The investment for the new terminal which was built for APEC completely came from the private sector. The new Nha Trang Airport project or the new terminal at Tan Son Nhat Airport also have many private investors," he said.

He went on to say that Van Don Airport also had private investment and Long Thanh Airport will be a public-private partnership project.

Bui Xuan Thong, deputy head of the delegation of NA deputies from Dong Nai Province approved of the idea to clear all the ground for Long Thanh Airport project at once. He also asked the government to quickly develop the adjacent urban area.

Regarding concerns that Long Thanh Airport will make the public debts spike, NA deputy Vu Trong Kim said one must be brave to be rich. He asked the government to announce the methods for recouping capital and repaying debts at the NA meetings to ease some of the concerns.
