The Regional Customs Branch IX said it had arrested a foreign national in connection with the case.
At about 8.30 pm on August 5, customs officers inspected a road vehicle entering Vietnam from Laos through the Lao Bao International Border Gate. During a screening scan, they detected suspicious images inside a consignment of luggage.
An inspection found that the traffickers had concealed the drugs inside water heaters and electronic components, using the items as cover.
Authorities traced the intended recipient and arrested Izuchukwu Calistus Odionye, 43, a Nigerian national, as he collected the consignment containing the drugs in Ho Chi Minh City on August 9.
The seized items included 2 kilos of suspected crystal methamphetamine and two packages of suspected heroin concealed inside the goods.
During questioning, Odionye allegedly admitted that the shipment contained drugs and said he had been hired to collect them in Ho Chi Minh City and transport them to Hanoi.
Authorities are continuing to investigate and expand the case.
