Deputy Head of the Standing Committee of the Central Propaganda, Lai Xuan Mon, gave the information at a press conference on Saturday morning. According to Mon, Lam gained unanimous votes from delegates at the 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam’s session held the same morning.

On May 22, General To Lam, who was acting as Minister of Public Security, was appointed by the National Assembly as the State President for the 2021-2026 term.
Lam, 67, was born in the northern province of Hung Yen’s Van Giang District. He was a member of the Politburo for the 12th and 13th terms, a member of the Party Central Committee for the 11th, 12th, and 13th terms, and a delegate of the National Assembly for the 14th and 15th tenures.
Between 1974 and 1979, he studied at the People’s Security Academy.
He was promoted to the rank of General in 2019.
He served as Minister of Public Security between April 2016 and May 2024 before being elected State President.
Lam was elected General Secretary after Late Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong passed away on July 19 at the age of 80.
