The late hours kept by many gold shops in Vietnam make them a prime target for robberies, according to a high-ranking police official.

At a meeting, held by the Hai Ba Trung District Police Office on October 10, Nguyen Duc Chung, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Police Department warned that gold shops, banks and credit organisations in Vietnam are at risk for such crimes.

Chung said that banks and gold shops should take precautions and be aware, and inform their staff to do the same, adding that the perpetrators of these crimes are not just Vietnamese, but foreign as well.

Senior Lieutenant Colonel, Vu The Hung, Deputy Head of Hai Ba Trung District Investigation Board, said, since 2008, Hanoi has witnessed nearly ten robberies at gold shops, including five in his district.

Hung noted that, many gold shops do not select staff carefully. Some even hire security guards who have previous convictions. Many of these places have substandard security systems.

According to the Hai Ba Trung District Police Office, the district has 292 jewelry and gold shops, credit organisations and banks. However, 15 among those do not have any security staff, while nearly 90 have no security camera systems at all.

Precautionary measures

The Hanoi police will stage a large-scale security drill at gold shops on October 15 following a recent horrific murder of three people in a gold shop robbery by 17-year old Le Van Luyen in Bac Giang Province.

The drill, which will take place at My Dinh National Stadium, is aimed at informing owners and employees of these establishments how to handle a robbery situation, and is expected to attract a large number of police and owners of local gold shops, said Deputy of the Hanoi Police Department Nguyen Duc Nhanh.

After the case in Bac Giang, more gold shop owners in Hanoi have installed security systems.
