Senior Lieutenant-Colonel Pham Van Thoi, Deputy Police Chief of Hoan Kiem District, said the department had reported to the Hanoi Party Committee Secretary Mr. Pham Quang Nghi about putting an end to the scamming problems around Hoan Kiem Lake.
On March 30, DTiNews published the article "Scam artists target tourists" detailing the activities of a group of women pretending to be street vendors and playing tricks on tourists to dupe them out of their cash. Following the incident, speaking to DTiNews, Secretary of Hoan Kiem District, Mr. Hoang Cong Khoi, said that the authorities had coordinated with the police department to investigate and hand out proper disciplinary action to those who were involved in the scamming.
On April 5, the Hoan Kiem District police reported that 97 street vendor cases were filed and total number of fines issued equalled VND 3.5 million (180 USD). Among the cases, 12 involved street vendors found to be scam artists that had been previously mentioned in a story broken by DTiNews. The police will continue to monitor the situation.
