A representative of Phu Quoc International Airport told Dantri on Monday that they've seen the resumption of many international flight routes to South Korea, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, China, and the Czech Republic among others which are carrying over 1,700 passengers daily.
However, only three domestic flight routes to Hanoi, Haiphong, and HCM City have remained in operation while all others have been halted.
"We're receiving only 3,000 domestic passengers to the airport daily," the airport said.
According to tourism firms, hotels, and restaurants, rising airfares are among the reasons for the falling numbers of passengers to Phu Quoc.
Local hotels have reported booking rates of below 50 percent for the coming New Year 2024 holiday.
At present, a return ticket on the Hanoi-Phu Quoc route during the coming New Year holiday costs between VND7-8.50 million, and the HCM City-Phu Quoc route costs between VND 3.50- 4 million per ticket.
Meanwhile, local airlines explained that the rising fuel prices have led to an increase in airfares. The falling number of passengers has also resulted in rising costs and fare hikes.
Tourism firms in Phu Quoc have worked with their foreign partners to bring more tourists to the island.
"We've discussed with our partners in the Czech Republic and Germany to bring more visitors from these markets to Phu Quoc," director of Vina Phu Quoc Travel Company, Nguyen Vu Khac Huy, said.
