Phu Quoc Island witnessed heavy rains, strong winds and high waves of between 2-4 metres between July 10-13 that damaged 41 houses and sank three fishing boats anchored at a wharf in Ganh Dau Commune.

All ships and ferries on Phu Quoc, Rach Gia, Phu Quoc-Ha Tien, Rach Gia-Nam Du and the districts of Kien Hai District had halted operations since July 11 to ensure passenger safety.

Director of the Kien Giang Maritime Port Authority Tran Van Tai said on Thursday morning that they had allowed ferry and boat services to resume from 6 am on July 14 as the weather has become better.

According to the Kien Giang Provincial Tourism Department, more than 40,000 tourists including over 2,100 foreign visitors were stranded on the island for three days during the suspension of shipping services.

A fishing boat with seven crew members aboard was returning to shore in Duong Dong Ward in Phu Quoc City on July 12 when it was sunk by strong wind and high waves. Five fishermen managed to swim ashore while the bodies of the missing were found over the following days.
