According to Nghe An provincial authorities, they have successfully rescued seven people from human trafficking rings since 2019. The border guards dealt with two cases and arrested two suspects and worked with the police to deal with three cases and arrested four people.

On November 29, 2019, Nghe An police arrested Nguyen Thi Tien while she was taking two women to China. An expanded investigation led to the arrest of Pham Thi Men. They admitted to the police that they had sold three women to China as brides. Tien was also a human trafficking victim but became a trafficker after she returned home. Five victims have been rescued.

The human trafficking situation in the area is still very complicated. Most of the victims are women and children who lack awareness of the risks and just want to find jobs abroad to improve their lives. The victims were told that they were chosen to work at foreign firms with high salaries and easy work but in the end, they are often tricked into prostitution, sold to be wives or used as forced labour.

The criminals used various social websites like Zalo, Facebook and Twitter to approach and trick the victims into a relationship before selling them abroad.

Recently, the police found out that several pregnant women from disadvantaged backgrounds or broken marriages or too many children, were tricked into selling their infants at a price of VND50m (USD2,100) to VND70m.

The Pacific Links Foundation has worked with Nghe An Union of Friendship Organisations to give 30 gifts to the victims of human trafficking who have been rescued from abroad. It is hoped that the gifts will help them reintegrate with society and have a stable life.
