According to the Lao Cai Provincial Transport Department, heavy rains from August 2-6 have caused 138 landslides on many national roads running through the province, including 4D, 4E, and 279 and provincial roads 151, 156, 157, and 159 depositing around 5,286 cubic metres of soil and rocks.

The department has instructed rescue teams to clear the roads, put up warning signs and fences and direct traffic in those areas.

It is forecasted that flash floods may occur in some local rivers, springs and lowland areas in some districts including Bac Ha, Bao Yen, Bao Thang, Bat Xat, Van Ban, and Sapa Town.

Local authorities have prepared to evacuate people living in flood-prone areas.

The neighbouring province of Yen Bai has also found nearly 100 landslides on the National Road 32 running through Mu Cang Chai District following heavy rains over the past few days. It is forecasted that heavy rains will last until August 8.

As of Monday morning, eight people have died in Lai Chau, Yen Bai, and Son La provinces due to floods and landslides that ravaged the region since August 4.
