Hoa Lam fishing residential area located by the Lam River in Vinh City’s Hung Hoa Commune is home to 82 households. Over the past four days, despite the sunny weather, the area has remained submerged.

Dau Van Thanh, 45, whose house has been flooded said that floodwaters sharply rose on the morning of September 23. Thanks to his years of experience in flooding prevention, Thanh had lifted his belongings off the ground. The water has receded but slowly.

According to Tran Trung Quan, chairman of the Hung Hoa People’s Committee, the households situated by the dyke of the Lam River usually live with flooding due to high tides or torrential rain. This time, many households have been evacuated to safe places, prioritising the elderly and children.

Many families have installed iron racks for storage. Important items are carefully packed in plastic bags and elevated to avoid being flooded.

The row of houses near the riverbank is still inundated by 30-40 cm of water.

Many households are cleaning their homes as floodwaters have fallen.

Chu Sinh Huy, 66, said that almost every year, the Hoang Lam fishing residential area battles with flooding, with some years witnessing the river waters rise as high as the rooftops. He along with other local people have been waiting for years to be relocated to a new resettlement area.
