On March 28, Hoa Phat Steel Production Complex's steel-making factory successfully produced its first batch of steel billet and officially put all other factories in the complex into operation. This marks a significant step in creating value-added materials for the metal making chain of the complex, which is the production of construction steel from iron ore.

The steel-making factory uses a Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) technology which was introduced for the first time in Vietnam. This new technology has been guaranteed to reduce energy consumption and is friendly to the environment. The first stage of the process involves producing high-quality steel billets using molten pig-iron (main material) added with scrap steel and a few different alloys. Square billets are made exactly 12 metres long with two leading dimensions 130x130x12 and 150x150x12; main steel grades are low-alloy steel and carbon steel. During the second stage, these square billets are used as input materials for steel-laminating factories, which completes the whole steel production process.
Mr. Dang Thanh Cam, General Manager of Hoa Phat Steel Joint-Stock Corporation said, "From April 1, 2010, the steel-manufacturing factory will be put into continuous operation. The factory is capable of producing about 15,000 - 20,000 tonnes of steel during its first couple of months, and later can gradually raise its production capacity up to 25,000 - 30,000 tonnes of steel per month. Once all the production processes are stable, the factory can produce up to 400,000 tonnes of steel per year consequently bringing the total steel production of Hoa Phat Group up to 700,000 tonnes per year to meet huge demands of the Vietnam market.
Hoa Phat Group is the first group in Vietnam that is applying this advanced production technology, and becoming one of the leading steel manufacturers in Vietnam.
