Nearly 250 northern communes face flood, landslide risks

Weather authorities have warned of flash floods and landslides in nearly 250 communes and wards across northern Vietnam after heavy rainfall pushed soil moisture levels close to or beyond saturation.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, parts of Tuyen Quang, Lao Cai, Thai Nguyen and Quang Ninh recorded heavy to very heavy rain from June 8 to the morning of June 9, with some locations receiving more than 140 mm.

Heavy rainfall was also reported in Lai Chau, Son La and Phu Tho, with accumulations ranging from 90 mm to 117 mm.

Forecasters said soil moisture levels in many areas had exceeded 85 per cent or reached saturation, increasing the risk of flash floods along small rivers and streams and landslides on steep slopes.

Additional heavy rain is forecast over the next several hours, prompting warnings for nearly 250 communes and wards across northern provinces.

In Hanoi, several communes, including Yen Xuan, Suoi Hai, Ba Vi, Yen Bai and Phu Cat, were listed among areas at risk.

Rainfall of 30-60 mm, with some areas receiving more than 100 mm, is forecast for the northwestern region, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An through June 9.
