Businesses outside the Vietnam Food Association (VFA) will be allowed to export rice beginning February 14.

Rice exports are a big source of income for Vietnam

According to a circular issued by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the eligibility of a trader to export rice will be based on three factors: rice export to targeted markets in the two previous years; rice exports in the two previous years and transactions with foreign partners.

These will be the only factors used to select qualified rice exporters, which will no longer be the sole privilege of VFA members.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s statistics showed that the country exported 6.88 million tonnes of rice, worth USD3.23 billion in 2010, up from the previous year by 15.4% in volume and 21.2% in value.

The largest importers of rice to Vietnam remained the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia in 2010.

In 2011, the nation is expected to export 6 million tonnes of rice.
