Farmers sell the dead fish on La Nga River on May 21
According to local farmers, they first noticed the incident on the evening of May 20 and the fish all died very quickly.
"By the morning of May 21, hundreds of tonnes of dead fish mostly carp, have been collected at the farms here," a farmer, Le Thi Tuyet Nga, said.
"The fish started to die at 10 pm last night and we tried to pull our cages to other areas some two kilometres away but this couldn't help," Nga said. "They died so fast."
The farmer said that she has lost about 20 tonnes of fish worth billions of dong.
Another farmer, Le Van Tuan, who lost some three tonnes of fish said that polluted water might be the cause of the fish death.
People's Committee of Dinh Quan District said that they have sent a team to investigate the losses and the cause of the incident.
An official of the committee said that this was not the first time such mass fish deaths occurred in this area but this may be the biggest case with largest losses.
