Many people quarantined after one diphtheria-causing death in Dak Nong

A nine-year-old girl in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong has died from diphtheria with a local residential area quarantined in response.

A nine-year-old girl in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong has died from diphtheria with a local residential area quarantined in response.

According to the Dak Nong Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the girl named Sung Thi Hoa in Quang Nam Commune in Dak G’Long District was taken to the provincial General Hospital on June 19 with coughs, sore throat and breathing difficulties.

After no improvement, she was moved to HCM City Hospital for Tropical Diseases. However, she died on June 20 because of heart-related complications.

The local Health Department then confirmed the second diphtheria case in Quang Hoa Commune was a nine-year-old boy named Ma Van Thanh, Hoa’s neighbour. The boy had frequent contact with Hoa.

The department conducted sterilisation and quarantined the area where the two patients’ house is located.

Quang Hoa Commune have also prepared vaccines against the diseases for local people aged between seven and 40.

Earlier on June 14, four people in Dak Sor Commune, Krong No District in Dak Nong Province were also confirmed to have been hit by diphtheria.

Diphtheria is an infection caused by strains of bacteria called Corynebacterium diphtheriae that make toxin. Diphtheria spreads from person to person, usually through respiratory droplets, like coughing or sneezing. It can also spread by touching open sores or ulcers of someone with a diphtheria skin infection.
