A memorial site in tribute to the 64 soldiers who died in a skirmish with Chinese forces on Johnson South Reef in 1988 will be inaugurated at Cam Ranh Bay on July 27.

Statues are being completed
Most of the construction has been completed including the lighting system and the roads leading to the site. The statues will be erected in late April and finer details will be done in June.
The site will be inaugurated in July
Dang Ngoc Tung, chairman of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour, asked Khanh Hoa Province Confederation of Labour to quickly finish ground clearance work.
The memorial site is located inside East Sea Park to the north of Cam Ranh Bay. It covers 2.5 hectares and is intended to remember the 64 soldiers that died and the 11 left injured during the battle which took place in the Spratly Islands’ Johnson South Reef on March 14, 1988. Three ships and the bodies of many of the servicemen were lost to the sea.
