Tran Thi Thuy Hoanh, 39, was diagnosed with the second stage of cervical cancer during her final month of pregnancy with her fourth child.
"That was another shock that came just some months after my divorce," the poor woman said. "I begged my husband to stay to help take care of our children but he just decided to leave. We had to move to live with my elderly mother."
Despite weak health, she gave birth safely to her fourth baby girl three months ago. However, she had to stay at the hospital for cancer treatment and has been unable to take care of her newborn child.
"While my mother is staying with me at the hospital, my eldest child who is 15 has to take care of her newborn sister," Hoanh said. "Luckily my child has received breast milk donated by other mothers who know about my situation."
Hoanh's mother, Truong Thi Tru, said that she was spending most of her time taking care of Hoanh at the Danang Oncology Hospital but they were always worried about the children at home.
"My poor grandchildren are having to take care of themselves at home with the support of some relatives and neighbours," she said. "I sometimes come home to check on them. I'm worried most for the three-month old child."
The elderly woman also expressed worries over the treatment fees for her daughter.
"I've borrowed over VND 100 million to cover hospital fees for Hoanh," she said. "Now we've run out of money and we're living on free meals donated by some charity groups. I hope that my daughter and grandchildren will receive some support to overcome this difficult time."
Tam Tien Communal People's Committee Vice Chairman Tran Hai Nam said that local authorities and neighbours have also tried to help Hoanh's family but they need more support.
