Work on the tunnel is almost complete and it is ready for the opening, said Luong Minh Phuc, Head of the city’s Management Board of Traffic Construction and Urban Projects.

Safety requirements, such as a fire prevention system and exit doors have been installed. The details that remain to be finished include lighting and the construction of toll booths.

The municipal Department of Transport and the tunnel management board have been working on a fee collection plan to submit it to the local People’s Committee.

Thu Thiem Tunnel – 1.49 kilometres long, 9 metres high, and 33 metres wide – has 6 lanes for use by both cars and motorbikes, and two 2-metre emergency exits, located on each side.

The tunnel is the most important component of the 22-km Dong – Tay (East – West) Boulevard project, which connects District 2, to the east, with Binh Chanh District to the west of the city.

Total investment in the tunnel project equals VND9.86 trillion (USD465.3 million), of which, 65% came from official development assistance (ODA) from the Japanese government.
