Many households in Hanoi’s Bach Dang Ward have extended their houses onto the banks of the Red River.
Most of the violators are those whose houses are adjacent to the Red River bank. They often pour soil or sand onto the river bed to make foundations to extend their houses.

Homes extended onto Red River
The extended parts of their houses are mainly built simply with steel frames and bricks. The construction is usually carried out at night to avoid being detected by management agencies.
At present, the Red River area near Bach Dang Ward’s alley 975 now looks like a construction site, with work being conducted on the third floor of a house, while the first and second floors have been put into use.
Vu Ngoc Toan from Hai Ba Trung District’s construction inspection board, said that this kind of construction had been happening in Bach Dang Ward for quite a long time. The ward is home to hundreds of households which live by the Red River.
After the recent inspection, local authorities fined violators and also requested them to disassemble any extensions.

The illegal houses are often built at night very quickly and homeowners often avoid visits by inspectors.
Earlier, in September this year, three illegally-built houses in the ward faced subsidence. After that, local authorities installed a warning in the area to ban illegal construction activities, however, violations have continued.
