Ho Chi Minh City has new chairman

Nguyen Thanh Phong, deputy secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Party Committee has just been elected to be the chairman of the city.

He will replace Le Hoang Quan, 62, who has completed his two terms in office.

Phong received 85.1 percent of the vote at the HCM City Party Committee's 8th Congress.

Le Van Khoa, head of the Department of Industry and Trade, and Nguyen Thi Thu, chairwoman of the city's trade union confederation, were elected to be vice-chairs.

Nguyen Thanh Phong was born in 1962 in Ben Tre Province and earned a PhD in economics. He became a National Assembly deputy in 1997 and secretary of the HCM City's Communist Youth Union in 2002.

In 2010, he was the party secretary of Ben Tre Province before being selected as deputy secretary of HCM City for the 2010-2015 term by the Politburo and won a second term election as the deputy secretary.
