Ta Long Hy, the association chairman, said that last year, local taxi firms punished 3,534 taxi drivers, with 642 people fired.

In 2015, 8,027 drivers in the city were rewarded for returning their customers the assets left in their cars. Among those, 17 drivers were presented with certificates of merit by the municipal authorities as each of them gave back assets worth over VND1 billion (USD44,400) or participated in arresting thieves and robbers.

HCM City is now home to around 10,700 cars, serving some 240 million turns of passengers last year, making up about 40% of the total number of passengers using public transport in the city.

The city has 30 taxi firms, in which, two companies named Cuu Long and Duc Linh operating less than 50 cars each will have their licenses revoked after January 31, 2016 under the government’s newly-issued decree.

Around 4,700 cars are operating under the form of Uber.
