According to estimates, the transport infrastructure in the capital city is in need of USD10 billion by the year 2015.

60 locations in Hanoi often face serious traffic jams

Director of the local Department of Transport, Nguyen Manh Hung said the city will mobilise the capital through innovative means, including issuing bonds and seeking official development assistance (ODA).

Hanoi will build many new roads to link inner-city districts with the suburbs in an attempt to ease traffic jams, Hung added.

Elevated roads and the expansion of national highways 1A, 5, 3 and 2, in addition to the Cat Linh-La Thanh-Thai Ha, Van Cao-Ho Tay and Nui Truc-Son Tay routes will be given priority.

Other projects will include upgrades to highways, including Hanoi-Haiphong, Hanoi-Lao Cai, Hanoi-Lang Son, Nhat Tan-Noi Bai and an extension of Hoang Quoc Viet and Le Van Luong roads.

In 2010, Hanoi licensed around 4,000 cars and 10,000 motorbikes every month, so that the total number is now 3.6 million motorbikes and over 350,000 cars. This year, the city expects to grant about 227,000 motorbike licenses and 90,000 car licenses.

Up to 60 locations in Hanoi often face serious traffic jams. Last year, the city punished over 10,000 traffic violations, contributing over 200 billion (USD9.66 million) to the state budget.
