The move has received support from many local people.

A local man, Pham Ba Uyen, 50, said that they now can take a walk easily on the pavement. "This pavement used to be plagued by illegal parking," he said. "Since the bollards were put up two months ago, pedestrians have more space to walk. I find this a very effective measure to prevent illegal encroachment."

Chairman of Khuong Mai Ward People's Committee, Mai Tran Xuan Duy, said that all the 47 bollards were movable as they were stuck to the pavement using glue. "The bollards can be easily moved when the illegal parking is curbed or in case of emergencies like fires," Duy said.

The bollards are about 45 centimetres tall and 35 centimetres in diameter. They have reflective markings so people can easily see them at night.

This is among various measures taken by Hanoi authorities in an attempt to deal with pavement encroachment.
