Hanoi issues chip-enabled transport cards for free bus users

Hanoi will issue free chip-enabled transport cards to passengers eligible for free travel on the city's subsidised bus network, alongside existing digital ticketing options.

The Hanoi Public Transport Management and Operation Centre said the cards would offer a more convenient option, particularly for elderly passengers, alongside digital tickets and national ID cards.

Eligible passengers can apply online from July 6 via vedientuonline.com.vn, submitting photos of both sides of their national ID card and a portrait photo.

The first batch of cards is expected to be issued between July 26 and July 31, while subsequent applications will be processed within 5-10 days after valid documents are received.

Applicants may either collect their cards at the centre's office in Giang Vo Ward or have them delivered by post for a fee.

Existing non-chip free travel cards will remain valid until December 31, 2026, giving passengers time to switch to the new system.

The city's integrated electronic ticketing system was launched across Hanoi's public transport network on June 25 as part of efforts to modernise transport management and fare collection.

The platform enables authorities to manage timetables, monitor operations and process settlements with transport operators electronically, while providing real-time operational data to support network planning and fare policy adjustments.

The system also automatically applies fare exemptions under city policies. From July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027, residents travelling within Ring Road 1 are entitled to free bus travel.

The platform digitises ticketing, dispatch, staff management and revenue settlement for transport operators, reducing paperwork and improving efficiency.

Passengers can pay fares using transport cards, digital tickets, bank cards or QR codes linked to e-wallets. Those aged 60 and above can simply tap their national ID cards to access free bus services.
