Vice Chairman of Hanoi’s People Committee Nguyen Van Khoi made the recommendation at a recent meeting in Hanoi while calling on donors to heighten their funding for the project.
The project has been stagnant because planning for underground section of the 12-kilometre tramway has not yet been approved, Khoi said.
The total investment needed has increased from the initial estimate of USD780 million, he added.
Khoi said that the Department of Architecture Planning will have to work with municipal authorities to get approval this month, in order to complete the design for the project by the end of year.
Construction of the tramway began in September last year with expected completion by 2015.
Over eight kilometres of the tramway will be elevated, while the rest will be underground, he said.
Funding for the project is coming from both French ODA and the Asian Development Bank’s Ordinary Capital Resources Fund.
