In the first two weeks of May, the disease caused three deaths.
According to the municipal Health Department, since early this year, more than 1,000 children were hospitalised due to the disease, nearly double from the same period of last year.
Cases of the disease appeared in 24 districts; Tan Binh, Binh Thanh, Tan Phu and Go Vap being hit the hardest.
Nguyen Dac Tho, Deputy Head of the municipal Department of Preventive Health said, hand, foot and mouth disease often appears from March through May, and September through November. But this year Ho Chi Minh City is still seeing a large number of cases.
The doctor added that, the disease may have mutated.
