The Phan Thiet-Giau Day Highway is flooded following heavy rains.

The severe flooding was triggered by prolonged heavy rains causing landslides and damage to hundreds of houses and roads in many provinces including Binh Thuan, Lam Dong, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau, An Giang, Hau Giang, and Kien Giang.

Many localities saw record-high rainfall of over 200 mm per day.

A landslide triggered by record rainfall caused many landslides in the Bao Loc Pass in Lam Dong Province. At 2.30 pm on July 30, rocks and soil fell from the pass onto National Road 20, burying a traffic police station. Three traffic policemen and a local resident were killed in the incident. Traffic on this road has also been blocked.

Landslides have also occurred on National Road 55 which connects Binh Thuan and Lam Dong provinces, blocking traffic.

Vice chairman of Da Mi Commune People's Committee, Tran Dinh Hoa, said that at least five landslides occurred, blocking traffic on the whole of National Road 55.

"We've mobilised rescue forces to clear the road, but it would take time due to the huge amount of trees, rocks, and soil that have fallen onto the road," he said.

In the Mekong Delta provinces, heavy rains and thunderstorms on July 29 and 30 damaged many houses and roads. A woman in Bac Lieu Province was killed and her husband and son were injured after their house collapsed during a thunderstorm.

According to the Bac Lieu Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, more than 110 houses were damaged in thunderstorms and whirlwinds on July 29 and 30 and the locality recorded record rainfall of 162 mm per day.

Authorities in Ca Mau Province also reported that 170 houses were damaged in heavy rains over the weekend.

A report from the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting showed that average rainfall recorded on July 29 and 30 in the provinces of An Giang, Hau Giang, and Dong Nai was between 90-162 mm per day. The two provinces of Soc Trang and Kien Giang saw the highest rainfall in the region, reaching over 210 mm per day.

The centre forecasted that heavy rains would continue in the region this week with average rainfall of between 50-150 mm per day.
