Chairman of Van Giao Commune People's Committee, Phu Van Tuan confirmed on the evening of September 13 that the incident occurred at 1pm the same day.
Local people noticed the incident at 2pm and rushed the children to a healthcare centre but they had all died," Tuan said, adding that local officials had visited the victims’ families to express their condolences.
Speaking to Dantri/DTiNews, director of An Giang Provincial Public Security, Dinh Van Noi, said that initial investigations showed that the children drowned and they were still further investigating the incident.
According to a report from the World Health Organisation, more than ten children drown each day in Vietnam while the drowning mortality rate per 100,000 population in 2017 was 7.2.
