Tropical depression nears East Sea

(Dan tri) - Forecasters say northern and southern Vietnam will see widespread thunderstorms and heavy rain in the coming days, while central heat eases from early July.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that from the night of June 28 to June 30, northern Vietnam would see a spell of moderate to heavy rain across a wide area, with rainfall concentrated at night and in the morning. The heaviest rain is forecast in Thai Nguyen, Cao Bang, Tuyen Quang, Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La and Phu Tho provinces, with total rainfall generally at 70-150mm and some places receiving more than 300mm.

From July 1 to July 5, the north is forecast to have thunderstorms at night and in the morning, with rainfall of 50-100mm per spell and isolated areas seeing more than 250mm.

The weather agency warned that Lang Son, Cao Bang, Thai Nguyen, Tuyen Quang, Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La and Phu Tho provinces should brace in the coming days for the risk of flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas.

According to the agency, on June 29-30, areas from Nghe An to Danang, along with the eastern parts of Quang Ngai, Gia Lai and Dak Lak provinces, will continue to experience hot weather, with temperatures of 36-38 degrees Celsius. From July 1 to July 5, the heat is expected to ease in these areas.

The agency said the Central Highlands will be affected by a strong south-westerly monsoon from June 28 to July 5, bringing showers, moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Other areas are forecast to have scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially in the late afternoon and evening. In southern Vietnam, the evenings of June 29-30 are expected to bring showers and scattered thunderstorms, with isolated heavy rain.

The weather agency said a low-pressure area was active over waters east of the Philippines and moving west-north-west. It is forecast to strengthen into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours and could move into the East Sea around July 1, with a probability of about 70 per cent.
