Large cracks and landslides have appeared across farmland in Gao Commune, affecting dozens of households. In some areas, sections of hillside covering nearly 1,000 square metres collapsed.
Nguyen Van Tung, a resident of Nang Long-Osor Village, said nearly 1,000 square metres of his farm slid into fields below after prolonged rain, sweeping away about 300 coffee trees, a well, water pump and irrigation equipment.
He estimated his losses at around VND 200 million (USD 7,600).
Tung said he discovered the extensive cracks and subsidence when he arrived at his farm early in the morning. The landslide occurred overnight and caused no casualties.
Dinh Van Tinh, head of Nang Long-Osor Village, said heavy rain from September 4-6, particularly on September 5, caused widespread landslides and subsidence.
Initial figures showed around 25 households in the village were directly affected.
In Plei O Pech Village, prolonged rain also damaged coffee farms and irrigation ponds. As of September 7, rice fields belonging to about 25 households had been affected, while coffee farms of 12 households suffered landslides that swept away crops.
Twelve irrigation ponds were also filled with soil and debris, raising concerns over water supplies for the next crop.
Gao Commune authorities said preliminary figures showed around 60 households with farms along streams had been affected by landslides and subsidence after days of heavy rain.
Residents have been warned to stay away from severely affected areas, while farmers with waterlogged coffee plantations have been advised to dig drainage channels to protect tree roots and yields.
