Director of Lao Cai Province Hydro-Meteorological Station, Luu Minh Hai, noted that these were the lowest temperatures recorded since the beginning of this winter.

Thick ice and frost have also appeared on the peak of Mount Phja Oac in the northern mountainous province of Cao Bang since early February 20, as temperatures dropped to below zero degrees Celsius.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicted the cold air will continue to affect other parts of the central and southern-central regions in the next two days.

The severe cold had killed 1,862 cattle by February 22.
