The Hanoi University of Culture held an international conference on November 29 focusing on the effect global integration has on families.

Statistics given at the conference indicated that one out of five families has serious violence problems, some even leading to fatalities.

The statistics also seemed to find a link between domestic violence and women's income, which it said could be reduced as much as 35% as a result. Taken as a national problem, this means the country loses over VND4.5 trillion (USD214.3 million), equal to 1.78% of GDP, annually.

According to a research from author Nguyen Ba Dat, from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, around 36% of Vietnamese children have witnessed domestic violence. These children often face high risk of mental problems such as anxiety and depression.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) launched a project on development of a national response system to domestic violence in August. The USD1.85-million project will last until December 2016.

To mitigate domestic violence, women and farmers' unions in localities nationwide have joined hands to set up models such as “Husbands say no to domestic violence” or “Husbands love wives”.
