According to Nhon Ly Commune People's Committee Chairman Nguyen Thanh Danh, a group of local fishermen happened to see the dolphins swimming in the waters between Hon Can and Hon Co islets and captured the scene on their phones.
Danh added that while dolphins' presence is normal, their frequent appearances near the coast of Nhon Ly in recent years indicated that the marine environment was improving.
Vo Thanh Luan, who recorded the video of the dolphins, said that at around 5.30 pm on May 19, while fishing with his friends about 4 kilometres off the coast of Nhon Ly, he saw a pod of over 100 dolphins swimming nearby.
"I often catch sight of a few dolphins while fishing, but this was extraordinary, over a hundred. They moved in layers across a wide area, so I only filmed those nearby," Luan added.
Nguyen Huu Dao, owner of Khanh An Seaside restaurant in Nhon Ly, also said that while dolphin sightings are not uncommon, the appearance of such a large pod was extremely special.
On May 19, around 100 dolphins also appeared near Hon Dung in Nha Trang Bay in the southern province of Khanh Hoa.
