The PM has just ordered the Vietnam Airlines Corporation to consider the possibilities for opening direct air routes from Vietnam to India and other South Asian countries in order to promote economic and trade relations, according to a statement from the government.
The Government chief also asked the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry to design a plan on establishing the Vietnam-India Business Council.
Vietnam and India established the diplomatic relationship in 1954 and upgraded to the Ambassadorship level on January 7, 1972.
The total two-way trade turnover sharply increased from US $72 million in 1995 to US $2,478 million in 2008. The figure is expected to reach US $3 billion this year and US $5 billion in 2015.
In October 2009, India recognized Vietnam as a full market economy and the two sides signed a trade agreement in goods.
Vietnam is one of promising destinations for Indian investors, including ONGC, Essar, Tata Steel, Larsen & Turbo, Ranbaxy, and Godrej.
