Danang vegetable village devastated following historic flooding

Heavy flooding has left Danang’s largest vegetable-growing area in ruins, with many households losing their crops.

Bau Tron vegetable village in Dai Loc Commune, Danang City, covering nearly 50 ha and home to more than 190 specialised farming households, has been left devastated after days of inundation.

Fields have been buried in silt and plants left waterlogged or broken. Residents watched helplessly as months of labour were wiped out.

Locals said prolonged heavy rainfall caused floodwaters to rise rapidly and recede slowly, leaving crops submerged in muddy water for days.

Most households are now attempting to clean up, although much of the produce has died and cannot recover.

Farmer Phan Dinh Hung, 59, searched his field for any remaining bamboo stakes. He said floodwaters rose too quickly for farmers to react, sweeping away most of their crops.

“The flood destroyed over 2,500 square metres of vegetables including bitter melon, loofah and papaya. We invested about VND 35 million (USD 1,400) and now everything is gone,” he said.

Another farmer, Le Vinh, said he felt powerless after more than 2 ha of bananas and various crops were submerged in floodwater.

“I never imagined the flood would be this big. Houses and fields are damaged. We just try to cope, there is nothing else we can do,” he said.

At the home garden of Huynh Van Nhan, nearly 200 papaya trees that were close to harvest have rotted and wilted, forcing him to destroy them.

“Papaya cannot withstand prolonged rain and flooding so it quickly rots. It is painful to remove the trees but we must plant again. We hope for support from local authorities with seedlings and agricultural supplies,” he said.

According to preliminary data from Danang authorities, the floods caused serious losses to life and property across the city.

Twelve people died, four remain missing and 47 were injured. Flooding also destroyed 78 houses, swept away 146 livestock animals and nearly 27,000 poultry.

In addition, 55 ha of rice, 718 ha of vegetables and 73 ha of annual crops were damaged, while 167 ha of aquaculture farms were affected and about 350 tonnes of food were washed away, spoiled or damaged.
