Danang struggling with widespread African Swine Fever

African Swine Fever has swept through the central city of Danang, affecting up to 10,251 pigs.

According to the Danang Department of Agriculture and Environment, African Swine Fever has spread to pig herds in 52 out of the city’s 94 communes and wards, with outbreaks reported in 384 villages and impacting 2,709 households.

To date, over 10,251 pigs have been infected, died, or been culled due to the outbreak, with a total weight exceeding 637,231 kilogrammes.

Eight localities have officially declared outbreaks namely Xuan Phu (July 16), Phu Thuan (July 18), Tra My (July 24), Que Son Trung (July 29), Son Cam Ha (July 29), An Thang (July 30), Dien Ban Tay (July 30), and Phuoc Tra (July 31). Meanwhile, Song Kon Commune has gone over 21 days without any new infections.

In response to the outbreak, the municipal people's committee has established a citywide Steering Committee for Disease Prevention and Control. In addition, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has launched two mobile inspection teams for African Swine Fever prevention and control across the city.

Authorities have distributed over 8,300 litres of disinfectant from national and local reserves to help localities carry out environmental sterilisation and disease control measures.

This disease has also ravaged 12 communes and wards in Hue City in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue, with 510 infected pigs culled.
