From 5 pm on Friday evening, vehicles were banned from entering Nguyen Hue Street in District 1. Some hours before the New Year, people flocked to the city centre, causing congestion for many streets in District 1.
Traffic police were on duty at the junction of Ly Tu Trong and Dong Khoi.
Many people had to drive onto pavements to avoid traffic jams.
A music show took place on Nguyen Hue Street.
Ngoc Vy from District 10 said that she and her friends walked on Nguyen Hue Street for hours to wait for New Year.
Several people took advantage of this occasion to earn money by juggling.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Ho Chi Minh City organised a countdown programme to welcome the New Year 2022 without guests or spectators. The programme took place from 10 pm on December 31 to 0:10 am on January 1 on Nguyen Hue Street and was broadcast live.
