Increases in petrol prices affect foods prices

After Tet, consumer prices often go up in addition to an increase in petrol prices, thus the consumer price index (CPI) remains high in March.

An increase in CPI of this month is at 0.78% in Ho Chi Minh City and 0.75% in Hanoi.

According to the Statistics Department of Ho Chi Minh City, most goods have increase in prices in Ho Chi Minh City. Specifically, transport sector has had the highest increase at 1.48%, following housing and construction materials at 1.26% ,and food & beverage at 1%.

CPI in other sectors such as beverage, tobacco, household goods, medicine, health service and education have also increased slightly.

In short, CPI of this first quarter has gone up 3.78% compared with the same period of last year at 10.27%. Its average increase is 1.26% per month.

In Hanoi, CPI in March goes up 0.75% compared with last month and 4.72% compared with last December. CPI of this first quarter goes up 9.58%.

The food & beverage industry has the highest increase in price at 1.23% whereas CPI of other sectors such as health care, education, and clothing has gone up from 0.01-0.05%.

According to market researching experts, the main reason of price increases is that petrol prices went up VND590 ($0.03) per litre on February 21.
