When temperatures drop below 10 degrees, students in preschool, primary and secondary education levels in Hanoi will be excused from class.

The move is aimed to not only ensure pupil’s health but also prevent possible illness triggered by the cold.

The municipal Department of Education and Training issued a dispatch on January 5, announcing that schools will be given days off when the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius.

Pupils in secondary education are free from school when the temperature is below 7 degrees Celsius.

Schools were told to maintain administrative procedures as normal days, in addition to the assignment of task-forces to be on duty so as to give guidelines to any pupils who still arrive schools.

Parents are encouraged to guide their children to study themselves at home to ensure continuous learning.

Nguyen Hiep Thong, the department’s head said, “When resuming teaching, schools must consider organising additional lessons to make up for non-school time. Teaching should follow school year’s timetable but not be overlapped or cut.”

According to the National Meteorology Forecast Centre, a strengthened cold wave may hit northern Vietnam on January 6 and 9. The cold spell will bring temperatures in Hanoi to as low as 10 degrees Celsius with a high of 13.

The centre also warned of frost in mountainous provinces. It said the temperature would plummet to 0 degrees Celsius and snow would appear in Mau Son and Sapa in Lao Cai Province.

An icy cold spell, combined with foggy weather over the past several days has caused the hospitalisation of thousands of children suffering from cold-related illnesses and severely affected production in the northern region.
