From late 2014 to June 17, 2015, Benderman picked up 14-16 year-old street boys at Hoan Kiem Lake, and enticed them to his rented home, where he sexually assaulted them.

The court head Benderman abused a number of boys multiple times.

In late June 2015, police caught Benderman carrying out lewd acts. Further investigations revealed he had sexually assaulted a number of teenagers, several of whom testified before the court.

The Montreal man arrived in Vietnam in June 2014 with a tourist visa, and later became a teacher at an English school. He also worked as a singer at a café in Hoan Kiem District.

The Canadian Embassy provided consular assistance but declined to comment on the case.
