The body of a 10-year-old boy who fell into a 35-metre deep concrete pillar at a construction site in the southern province of Dong Thap three weeks ago was retrieved on January 20.
Rescue forces pulled the body of Thai Ly Hao Nam from mud at a depth of more than 25 metres underground at 1:20 am on January 20, vice chairman of Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee, Doan Tan Buu, announced the same morning.
According to the official who was present at the scene, the boy’s body remained intact due to a closed environment which made the decomposition process slower than usual.
"His body was taken home for burial following the family’s wish, " he said.
He revealed that preliminary results of investigations and forensic examinations at the scene showed the boy had died from multiple injuries when he impacted against the hard wall of the concrete pillar and fell into the water.
The provincial government will soon ask relevant agencies to clarify the cause and handle violations, if any, added the official.
According to local authorities, Nam entered the construction site of the Roc Sen Bridge project with three other friends to look for scrap metal on December 31. He then suddenly fell into a hollow concrete pillar which was around 25cm in diameter and 35m deep. His friends called for help and a rescue team were sent to the area soon afterwards.
Rescue workers were immediately deployed, and experts adopted various rescue options several times until the body of the victim was retrieved on January 20.
