Dr Doan Ngoc Khoi, deputy director of Quang Ngai Comprehensive Museum, said the six graves were found near Chinh Stream in An Hai Commune, where the Sa Huynh Culture once flourished. Various jewellery including earrings and bracelets made from conch shells were found buried in the graves.

"Some have burial objects but some do not. I think this shows the wealth gap of that time," Khoi said.

The graves were next to each other in an area of 10 square metres. Child remains were also found in some graves. The archaeologists have discovered agricultural tools such as axes, chisels and hoes.

The Sa Huynh people settled at the foot of Thoi Loi Mountain because of the nearby Chinh Stream. According to Khoi, Sa Huynh Culture on the island might have developed different aspects than the Sa Huynh Culture on the mainland so it's important to protect the site and carefully excavate the graves.

The Institute of Archaeology co-operated with Quang Ngai authorities to start excavating the sites near Chinh Stream in 2000 and 2005. They continued the dig this year.
