Traffic accidents in Vietnam sharply fall

Traffic accidents in Vietnam have sharply dropped after two months of implementing Decree 168, which established new penalties for traffic violations.

According to the Traffic Police Department, Vietnam recorded 2,895 traffic accidents in the first two months of the year, leaving 1,582 dead and 2,003 injured, a decrease of 1,443 cases, 244 fatalities, and 1,458 injuries from a year earlier.

Traffic accidents dropped by 937 compared to the previous two months, with deaths down by 416 and injuries down by 616.

During the two months, traffic police nationwide handled over 504,500 violations, revoked more than 38,700 driving licenses and temporarily seized close to 146,500 vehicles.

Traffic violations saw a significant year-on-year decline, with passenger overloading offences down 58.5 percent, overloading and oversized vehicle infractions (50.2 percent), alcohol-related violations (45.9 percent), speeding (27.5 percent), red-light violations (17 percent), and lane infractions (39 percent).

Decree 168 stipulates new penalties for traffic violations. Under the decree, cars that fail to stop at red lights will be fined VND20 million (USD780), an increase from the previous fine of VND6 million (USD230). Meanwhile, motorbikes running red lights will face fines ranging from VND4 million to VND6 million.
