Hoang Van Lam, 42, from Minh Xuan Commune in Luc Yen District, has lived in the forest for nearly twenty years.
Lam said that in 2006, his wife left for the south, leaving their three-year-old son in his care. He took various jobs to support his son.

Lam has shown signs of mental illness for years. Every day, he frequently mutters nonsense. In addition, he suffers from a mysterious disease that causes his skin to ulcerate, leaving him in constant pain. His condition has not improved despite being taken to various hospitals for treatment.
Reaching Lam’s house requires walking across a small stream, which is the only access to his home. During the rainy season, the rising water levels make crossing even more dangerous.
Lam’s house is built from wooden planks that have rotted over time. Inside, there is nothing of value, except two rickety bamboo beds, a wood-burning stove tucked against the wall, and a few worn-out cooking utensils.

The house lacks electricity and a toilet. Lam must fetch water from a nearby stream for drinking and daily use.
His 22-year-old son, Hoang Van Duan, works in the northern province of Bac Ninh, earning a very modest income. Each month, he sends VND1-2 million to assist Lam.
Hoang Van Que, head of At Thuong Village, said Lam’s family is extremely poor. He hopes that Dantri/DTiNews readers will support him. The local authorities have also called on residents to contribute donations to help the family build a new house.
