A seven-year-old boy who is struggling with leukaemia has just received support to realise his dream of becoming a firefighter.
A unit of 30 officers from the HCM City Fire and Rescue Police Department have co-operated with the city's Children's Hospital to provide Trung Quan with an unforgettable experience. The activity was organised at the hospital on August 4.
A member of the HCM City Fire and Rescue Police Department, Do Ngoc Duc, said that they decided to help Quan realise his dream after hearing about his situation.
"This is the first time such an activity has been held at a hospital for a child patient,” the police officer said. "We hope that this could be an encouragement that will help Quan have more strength to overcome his disease."
Quan wore a firefighter uniform that had been designed for him.
A model fire engine that has similar functions as a real engine was also designed and brought in for the boy to operate. He was closely instructed to do the work of a firefighter.
According to Quan's mother, Dang Thi Kim Loan, he was found to have cancer in April this year and has been staying in the hospital for treatment since.
"While staying at the Emergency Department, Quan said that he wished to become a firefighter," the mother said. "He has always admired firefighters and sees them as heroes. I had to encourage him to follow treatment so that he can get over the disease and realise his dream. I also asked for help from the hospital and the municipal Fire and Rescue Police Department to realise his dream."
The mother said that her son had been very excited when she told him that the city firefighters would arrive and instruct him to do their work.
"I want to send my sincere thanks to the hospital and the city fire police department for their valuable support," she said. "I was moved to tears when seeing the joy on my son's face. He seemed to forget all the pain that was torturing him."
"I'm so happy to become a firefighter today," Quan said after completing his activity. "Thank you, firefighters, for helping me. I’ll always remember this day."
