According to a report from local authorities, some local people saw the two bodies drifting at a beach in Cuong Gian Commune while going for a walk at 5 am on October 24.

"The two teenage boys, Dang Tien Dung and Tran Phuoc Sang, both 14, went to the beach for a swim at 4 pm on October 22," the report said. "They were then stuck in a whirlpool and swept away in strong waves. Their families informed local authorities about their sons' missing and rescue forces had searched around the area after finding their bikes, slip-ons, and clothing at the beach."
The bodies were found over 10 kilometres from the site where they swam and went missing.
