Vietnam-China cross-border train route to be resumed

Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) will reopen the international cross-border passenger train service operation between Gia Lam Station in Hanoi and Nanning in China following a five-year suspension.

The move came after the Ministry of Construction approved the resumption of the Gia Lam-Nanning railway line, using the 1,435 mm standard gauge line via Dong Dang (Vietnam)-Pingxiang (China) border gates on May 25.

VNR has finalised infrastructure, personnel, and train schedules from Dong Dang to Gia Lam stations to prepare for the route's resumption.

The route has been suspended since February 5, 2020, as a Covid-19 prevention measure.

On May 13, 2025, VNR participated in bilateral negotiations with the Dong Dang-Lang Son Border Gate Economic Zone Authority and a government delegation from Pingxiang City, Guangxi, China. Both sides agreed to restart the Gia Lam-Nanning railway service.
