According to the prime minister's decision on the Master Plan for Kien Giang for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, the province is planned to become a national maritime economic hub and a premier destination for high-end tourism, resorts, trade, services, and high-tech healthcare on both regional and international scales. Building a green, innovative, and sustainable city requires effective environmental management.
Phu Quoc produces around 200 tonnes of solid waste daily, and its annual waste production is anticipated to grow by 10-12 percent. However, the city lacks a waste treatment plant and depends on a temporary landfill in Dong Cay Sao.
This issue has affected the island's reputation in the run-up to the Asia-Pacific Economic Forum (APEC) in 2027, further underscoring the urgency of a solution.
