A large section of grass near Xuan Huong Lake are severely damaged due to the accumulation of ash from street vendors' fires.
The Da Lat People's Committee announced on February 19 that they had instructed the Department of Culture and Information and relevant ward authorities to strengthen urban management. This includes strict measures against unauthorised street vending around the national scenic site of Xuan Huong Lake.
According to the committee, an increasing number of illegal street vendors and impromptu food stalls have appeared on the bank of Xuan Huong Lake, particularly in front of Lam Vien Square. Vendors have been found gathering, cooking, and leaving behind waste, significantly impacting the environment and aesthetics of the national heritage site.
In the evenings, many vendors have been lighting fires, burning large patches of grass near the lake. Charred wood, ash, and partially burnt firewood have been discarded directly onto the grass or into the lake. Spilled food and beverages have also stained sidewalks, creating an unsightly mess.
Le Anh Kiet, Head of the Da Lat Department of Culture and Information, stated that authorities have been working closely with local ward committees to increase surveillance and enforcement. Officers have also been deployed to prevent unauthorised street vendors and impose strict penalties on violators.
"To enhance monitoring, additional surveillance cameras will be installed around Xuan Huong Lake," he said. "Footage will be shared with city leaders and ward officials, ensuring accountability. Each ward's chairman will be held responsible for managing their designated area under the supervision of the city's people's committee."
